The story behind the image

Our stop for this night was Oban, the Gateway to the Isles. This is the view from the North Pier. You immediately recognize McCaig’s Tower, overlooking the harbour. The famous Oban Distillery is located in the center of the town, and certainly another major attraction.

Oban is an important ferry link towards the Isle of Mull. The ferry, operated by Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) departs several times a day for Craignure. Back in 2005, you did not have to buy your tickets in advance. I was sufficient to just show up ahead of time.

As you can see, the weather was not too good that evening, 18 years ago. It was raining from clouds so deep, you could almost touch them with your hands. Once the rain had stopped, though, the streets and shops were illuminated and presented Oban in a different light, very charming and cozy.
