The story behind the image
On our long trip through Italy in 2000 we stopped for one night in Pienza. As the weather was really mixed, we decided to check in early and just explore the town. The next morning we continued our trip to Montepulciano which is just a few kilometers away and very well worth a visit. You should park your car outside the town (at the foot of the hill) and walk the way up to the historic church.
I shot this image from P1, the Parcheggio 1 where also the tourist office is located. I especially like the way the buildings have been adapted to the hill, showing off the skills of the architects and construction workers of the past – and giving the village a beautiful skyline for the photographers today, with the Chiesa di Sant’Agostino being the highlight of the composition.
Lovely.
