The story behind the image

Here is another historic shot by photo pioneer Albert Giesler. It shows the patio of the Hotel Dieksee in Malente-Gremsmühlen in Germany. The print is undated and does not carry any written capture date.

The hotel still operates today but a long tradition. It was built in 1878/79 and opened its doors originally as Hotel Hoffnung (literally Hotel Hope) and got renamed only a year later to its current name, Hotel Dieksee. It is beautifully located directly at the lake promenade and has always been a tourist magnet in Malente-Gremsmühlen.

This photo is part of a series by Albert Giesler that shows the wider surroundings of his hometown Eutin where he had been operating a popular studio since 1886. He visited hotels and restaurants to capture images for prints, postcards and for promotional shots, but he also photographed landscapes, people, and events in the area.

As part of the series, he also released other shots of Malente-Gremsmühlen, and one of these carries the date 1897. Being a smart, efficient, and busy, photographer it is quite likely that this image had been shot during the same period.
