The story behind the image
San Gimignano is one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting Tuscany in Italy, and it’s easy to see why: it’s got a long history, it’s not as big and buzzing as Florence but not sleepy either, it’s got small streets with excellent restaurants – and it’s nestled nicely within the Tuscan hills.
Its unique skyline features several towers that were erected when the town got wealthy in the middle ages, thanks to becoming a key stopover for travelers to and from Rome as well as an important marketplace for saffron. The towers indicated the wealth of each family, even if it was far from luxurious inside the towers.
