The story behind the image
San Gimignano is the town best known for its seven towers, located at the heart of Tuscany in Italy. It should be (and probably is) on the must-see list of visitors to the region. That’s why the small streets are full of tourists, so if you want to experience some normality, I’d recommend to be there before 10 am.
I remember that back in 2000 when we were in San Gimignano for the first time, we found the main street very busy but I noted that “you can still find quiet places if you leave the tourist trails”. This is still true, but it has become more difficult for sure.
Anyway, my image shows the Piazza della Cisterna which is one of the main Piazzas of the town. Here, you can get (drumroll) icecream made by Sergio, a former world champion icemaker! (His shop is called Gelateria Dondoli and is slightly left of the center in the image.) Not only is his icecream superb, he’s also a friendly and funny guy who regularly greets the customers waiting in a (sometimes very long) queue in front of the shop. And chances are high that you have seen him on TV before (especially in travel reports covering Tuscany.) So, it seems he’s not only a master in icecream making but also marketing. 🙂
