The story behind the image
Today, the 14th of June, is the day when Munich was officially founded – in the year 1158. Back then, it was just a settling (not a town or city), and it was called ‘Munichen’ which is suprisingly close to its English name.
It became a city over the following century and achieved the status of the Bavarian captial in 1506.
When the new town hall was erected at the Marienplatz in 1867, people were complaining about the (too) high tower. But they liked its key feature: The Glockenspiel which shows an animation of milestones in the development of the city, like becoming a key location for the salt transport or the Schäffler dance. Every morning at 11 am and 12 noon the animation can be admired for several minutes, and four different pieces or songs can be heard. From March to October, it can also be seen at 5 pm.
Happy Birthday, Munich!
