The story behind the image
If you had not read the image title, would you have considered this photo to show a highway in Namibia? I wouldn’t. Probably I’d associate this image with Arizona or Utah: Seemingly endless plains with scrub under a (mostly) blue sky and a large mountain range in the far distance.
Yet, it shows the C26 near Windhoek. The tarred highway had ended a few kilometers earlier (here), and now we were testing our VW Polo Classic on the gravel highway.
I really love the simplicity of this image, and the straight line of the highway that only gets broken by the gentle hills here and there.
We found the gravel highways in Namibia to be well maintained, knowing that the highways should not be a problem. At least, that’s what we thought when we returned to Windhoek later that day. (As we would find out later, we were utterly wrong with our assumption. More here.)
