The story behind the image
This is my grandmother, Edith Gehring, photographed by Albert Giesler, one of the true photo pioneers in Northern Germany. Born in May 1862 in Eutin in Germany, Giesler soon pursued a career in photography, back then a green field. He got his training from various photographers in Northern Germany and opened his studio in 1886 in Eutin, his hometown. Especially his portrait photography became quickly popular and many customers started to collect his photos as art. He was even appointed as the official photographer of the Oldenburg court. A search on eBay for “Alb. Giesler” returns plenty of his works. He must have been very busy.
This photograph was probably taken in Giesler’s studio in Eutin around 1923. By that time Giesler had further developed his artistic style. This composition clearly shows that he had moved away from the rather uniform style of the early portrait photos (where the most important factor was that the people in the photo could be clearly recognized.)
Edith was born on the 3rd October 1905 in Oldenburg (Oldenburg). I never met her in person, sadly, but I am glad to own this photo of her.
