Gairloch Wester Ross

Scotland greeted us with a shiny smile the next morning, and we continued our trip from Aultbea through Wester Ross. This is the village called Gairloch, situated at Loch Gairloch. In the back you can see the northern tip of the Isle of Skye.

Loch Maree Scotland

The whole route along A832 is one beautiful spot, like this view on Loch Maree from north-west. Take your time while you are here - and try to be as flexible as possible with your accommodation plans, so you can enjoy the scenery during sunshine (or, at least, without rain)!

Loch Maree

Loch Maree - is one of the many dramatic places in Wester Ross. It is quite secluded, and you can enter the hiking trails at several occasions.

Wester Ross Loch Maree

Another photo of Loch Maree with the 980m high Slioch in the back, overlooking the Loch.

Loch Torridon

At Kinlochewe we strongly recommend to take the A896 towards the west coast. While being a single track road, this will provide you with countless georgeous sights, like this view across Loch Torridon close to Kenmore. Just do not rush it - take your time enjoying this part of the trip!

Cuaig Scotland

And then we finally met the west coast again. The route between Fearnmore and Applecross is well worth the effort of driving on single track roads. This is the viewpoint called Cuaig, the photo showing the view towards south-west, with the mountains of the Isle of Skye in the back. We were speechless when we saw this. Could it get any better?

Inner Sound Scotland

A secluded beach between Cuaig and Applecross. In the back the Inner Sound and the Isle of Raasay. Breathtaking.

Scotland West Coast

And another photo of the West Coast and the Inner Sound. The A896 adds another 40 kilometers to your trip, and being made mostly of single-track roads, this will take considerable time! Also, please consider many photo stops if the weather is fine. :-)

Eilean Donan Castle

The Scots say that this is their most romantic castle - Eilean Donan Castle, and indeed it looks beautiful as it stands on its own small island, connected just by a stone bridge. This is a must-see for your trip. The best viewpoint for photos is on the western side of the castle across the A87 bridge! In the evening you'll be simply blewn away by the beauty of this place.
